Buck Island is a remote, private island just off Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and truly one of the most special places to have a wedding in the Lowcountry. Arriving by boat, stepping onto the dock, and walking down the tree-lined path toward the beautifully renovated home feels a little surreal. The entire property feels natural, elevated, and welcoming while still holding onto everything that makes the Lowcountry so beautiful.
As a Hilton Head Island wedding photographer, I’ve been lucky enough to photograph a couple of weddings on Buck Island, and it has quickly become one of my favorite places to photograph a wedding.
A Private Island Wedding Experience
When you choose Buck Island for your wedding, you’re not only choosing a beautiful place to say “I do.” You’re creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone you invite.
It’s the kind of place that turns a wedding into an entire weekend of memories. The oak trees give the island an incredible sense of serenity, and with the property sitting right on the water, there really is a beautiful view everywhere you turn.
For couples dreaming of an intimate, elevated Hilton Head Island wedding, Buck Island offers something completely different from a traditional venue while still feeling deeply connected to the Lowcountry.
Where Is Buck Island?
Buck Island is a private, 10-acre island located just off the coast of Hilton Head Island, where Broad Creek meets the Calibogue Sound and Intracoastal Waterway. Despite feeling completely secluded once you arrive, it’s only a short boat ride from Hilton Head and Harbor Town.
That combination is one of my favorite things about a Buck Island wedding. You get the feeling of a true destination wedding and private-island escape while still being close to everything Hilton Head Island has to offer.
This couple actually lives in Charleston, South Carolina, so their wedding was such a beautiful example of choosing a Lowcountry destination outside their home city while still keeping their celebration relatively close to home.
For couples considering both Charleston wedding venues and Hilton Head Island wedding venues, Buck Island offers something really unique. You still get the live oaks, marsh, water, and unmistakable coastal South Carolina landscape, but with the privacy of celebrating on an island with your favorite people.
As a Hilton Head Island and Charleston wedding photographer, I love how Buck Island brings together so much of what makes the Lowcountry special.
Getting Ready at Buck Island
The home on the property provides plenty of space for guests to stay, spend time together, and get ready on the wedding day. The bridal suite is especially beautiful, with plenty of natural light for getting-ready photos, hair, and makeup.
For this wedding, I got to work with one of my favorite hair and makeup artists, Lauren Norton Beauty. Lauren specializes in natural, polished beauty that still feels like you, which fit the relaxed and intentional feeling of this entire day perfectly.
Her Mom’s Veil + Wedding Photos on Film
One of my favorite parts of the morning was when she put on her mom’s wedding veil. It was such a simple, sentimental detail, and one that felt especially fitting to photograph on film.
I photographed a lot of this wedding on both digital and 35mm film, letting the two formats work together throughout the day. Film has a softness and nostalgia to it that I love for weddings, especially for moments like this that already hold so much history and meaning.
As a Hilton Head Island film wedding photographer, I love using film alongside digital to document a wedding in a way that feels honest, timeless, and a little imperfect. The grain, movement, and unexpected moments are part of what makes it feel so special.

Vibrant Florals + Personal Details
While the private island setting already made this wedding unique, there were countless details throughout the day that made it feel completely like them.
Sweetfield Flowers created florals filled with rich pinks, reds, purples, and softer blush tones. Against the lush greenery and natural landscape of Buck Island, the color felt vibrant and romantic without taking away from the beauty of the island.
The couple also worked closely with Signature Catering & Events to bring so many fun, personal elements to life. Champagne and fries were served during cocktail hour, milk and cookies made their way onto the dance floor, and Skyline Chili was brought out for the after-party.
Nothing felt like it was included simply because it was “supposed” to be at a wedding. Every detail felt personal to them.

Yes, Their Cats Walked Down the Aisle
One of my favorite details of the entire day: the couple brought their two Ragdoll cats to Buck Island—and they actually walked down the aisle with them.
The cats spent the morning hanging out while everyone got ready and were incorporated into the reception with two custom cake toppers made to look just like them.
It was personal, unexpected, and exactly the kind of detail that made this wedding so memorable.
A Rainy Island Dance Party
After their romantic outdoor ceremony and dinner, everyone hit the dance floor.
The couple loves house music, so DJ Wade with OtherBrother Entertainment brought the perfect energy with fun mixes that kept everyone dancing. A live saxophonist joined him on the dance floor, playing alongside the music and moving through the crowd all night.
They also incorporated the hora, a Jewish wedding tradition, into the reception, with the couple being lifted into the air on chairs while their friends and family danced around them. It was easily one of the most energetic moments of the night and fit perfectly into a reception that never took itself too seriously.
At one point during the reception, the couple snuck away to dig up the bourbon bottle they had buried on the property almost a year before their wedding.
According to Southern tradition, burying a bottle of bourbon before your wedding is supposed to bring good weather on the big day. There was still a little rain, but it ended up becoming part of what made the day so much fun. Everyone embraced it.
The planning and vendor team did an incredible job adjusting as needed so the couple never had to lose sight of what mattered. They still had their ceremony outside, danced all night, and got to fully enjoy the experience they had envisioned.

Embrace the Wedding Day You Actually Get
One of my favorite things about this wedding was how little the couple let the unexpected parts of the day take away from their experience.
There was rain, plans had to shift, and the vendor team had to make adjustments throughout the day—but none of that stopped them from having an incredible wedding.
If there’s anything I’ve learned as a Hilton Head Island wedding photographer, it’s that the best wedding days aren’t necessarily the ones where everything goes exactly according to plan.
A few things I always recommend:
- Build a vendor team you trust. When weather or timelines change, having experienced vendors who can adjust without creating stress makes such a difference.
- Leave a little room in your timeline. A wedding day feels completely different when you aren’t rushing from one thing to the next.
- Don’t let the forecast control your experience. Lowcountry weather can change quickly, and sometimes a little rain ends up creating some of the most memorable moments and photographs.
- Choose the things you actually love. Walk your cats down the aisle. Serve champagne and fries. Play house music. Your wedding doesn’t need to follow a formula.
- Stay present. Once the day arrives, let your vendor team handle the logistics so you can actually experience everything you’ve spent so much time planning.
Their day is such a good reminder that the goal isn’t a perfectly executed wedding. It’s getting married, being surrounded by your favorite people, and having a day that genuinely feels like the two of you.
Making Your Wedding Feel Like You
From escaping to a private island off Hilton Head to walking their cats down the aisle, serving champagne and fries, dancing in the rain, and eating milk and cookies on the dance floor, this wedding was the perfect reminder that your wedding doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.
The best wedding days are the ones that actually feel like you.
As a Hilton Head Island and Charleston wedding photographer, these are the celebrations I love photographing most—days filled with personality, meaningful details, and plenty of room for real moments to unfold.
If you’re planning a Buck Island wedding, Hilton Head Island wedding, Charleston wedding, or destination wedding in the South Carolina Lowcountry, and you’re looking for documentary-style photography with an elevated, editorial feel, I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming up.
